US 51 Ohio River Cairo Bridge back open after being hit by barge

UPDATE: The bridge has reopened to traffic.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says traffic is halted on the U.S. 51 Ohio River Cairo Bridge between Cairo, Illinois, and Wickliffe, Kentucky, because a barge reportedly hit one of the bridge piers.

KYTC spokesman Keith Todd says traffic is expected to be halted for about two hours. Todd says a KYTC inspector has been dispatched to the bridge to run a safety check.

The strike was reported on the bridge’s right descending pier. A tow boat reported hitting the bridge with several empty hopper barges around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Todd said, because of 30-mile-per-hour winds.
