Districts report snow day school work a success

Some students stayed home Monday for another snow day but, unlike when you were a child, they had to complete school work.

Livingston County is one of two school districts in western Kentucky trying out a new program this year. The district calls them live red days, and Monday was the county’s fifth live red day this year. Students go home with practice packets and online lessons to work on when the weather keeps them from school.

With so many rural roads, the district is accustomed to taking longer to get back in the classroom after snow, but now teachers and parents say the snow days aren’t a waste.

As a teacher and a parent, Sunni Ogg says she sees the benefits of live red days from both sides. She answers texts, emails, phone calls from parents and students, without a single negative message.

Hearing from her students and helping daughter Victoria at home, Ogg says the newness of school during a snow day keeps all her students interested. But, she says, it’s the payoff at the end of the year of having fewer makeup days that keeps them studying.

"I think they’re more excited this year because they can see where its going to benefit them," she says.

Data in from day one shows 98 percent of students completed their live red assignments, and 88 percent of parents said it was a success.

Sheri Henson, superintendent of instruction, says the data supports that their first live red day went better than expected. "There’s been some real out of the box opportunities that we usually don’t get to take advantage of," she says.

Teachers and students say they still need to get back in the classroom, though, because keeping the boredom at bay only lasts so long.

The district only has 10 live red days they can use in the school year. When those are used up, it’s back to regular snow days.

The live red days don’t mean the district won’t tack on makeup days at the end of the year. Students still have to have so many instruction days.
Live red days help to make a dent in unexpected time students may have off, but the district may make the decision to still tack on days.

Live red school material is always review or practice lessons. The school work will not introduce new material.
