Man stabbed in Sikeston charged with assault

Police in Sikeston, Missouri, say a man who was stabbed Tuesday now faces an assault charge relating to that incident. 

Police say officers were dispatched to Jaycee Street in Sikeston at 10:44 a.m. Tuesday for a reported stabbing. At the scene, officers found that 30-year-old James Applewhite Jr. had multiple cuts to his abdomen, and he told officers Travis Blackmon stabbed him. 

Police say Blackmon was at a house on Jaycee Street when Applewhite Jr. and 66-year-old James Applewhite Sr.drove up. They say the younger Applewhite got out of the vehicle and chased Blackmon while wielding a large metal flashlight and attacked Blackmon when Blackmon fell to the ground. Police say Blackmon defended himself with a knife. Blackmon told officers the elder Applewhite kicked him multiple times during the altercation. 

Blackmon had multiple injuries to his head, hands and wrist, including fracturing, according to police. Applewhite Jr. and Blackmon were treated at a hospital and released. 

James Applewhite Sr. and James Applewhite Jr. were arrested and charged with first degree assault and armed criminal action. James Applewhite Sr.’s bond was set  at $15,000 cash or surety and James Applewhite Jr.’s bond was set at $25,000 cash or surety.
