Two tractor-trailer wreck sends one to hospital

The driver of a tractor-trailer was injured in Franklin County, Illinois, early Wednesday morning after swerving to avoid a deer and hitting another tractor-trailer.

The Illinois State Police says a semi driven by 33-year-old Scott Leach of Des Moines, Iowa, was northbound on Interstate 57 at mile post 63. Police say Leach swerved to avoid a deer, entered the median, came back out of the median and overturned.

State police say the dark undercarriage of the overturned semi was facing toward northbound traffic and the driver of another semi didn’t see it in time to avoid hitting it. The driver, 62-year-old Patrick Shinn of Highland Illinois, struck hit the front end of the overturned trailer after braking heavily. The impact ruptured the fuel tank of Shinn’s semi, causing a small spill state police say was put out by the West Frankfort Fire Department.

I-57 North was closed until 7:15 a.m. for crash scene clean up and investigation. Leach was cited, police say, for violating the median. He sustained minor injuries in the wreck, and he was taken by ambulance to a local hospital.
