Growing Trend: More grandparents raising their grandchildren

Many grandparents are raising their grand kids and experts say the opiate epidemic is partially to blame. Military deployment and a growth in the number of incarcerated women also contribute to the trend.

Social service agencies are trying to place foster children in what they call kindship families. That’s because research shows children fare better with family than in foster care.

Now some states, like Georgia, are offering financial aid for kinship families because many grandparents live on a limited income.
