Two adults charged with child abuse after keeping teen in closeted area on back porch

Two adults in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri face child abuse charges after a 15 year-old was kept in a small closeted area on a back porch.

Deputies arrested James Hughes, 36, and Rebekah  Hughes, 33, of Old Appleton, Missouri.  After issuing a search warrant for their home, deputies found a 15 year-old female was living in a 10’x8′ foot section of the back porch.  They say the room had been secured by a locked door which was only to be opened from the outside.

The walls were carpeted and several windows were screwed shut. They say the teen was given a small amount of food and a bucket for the bathroom.  Her bed was a small piece of foam and a bed sheet on wooden slats.  Deputies say she was able to jump approximately 10′ to freedom through one of the windows left unsecured, and ran into an off duty sheriff’s deputy.

Their bond is set at $50,000 or surety with conditions they don’t have contact with the victim and not the leave the state of Missouri. Deputies say two other children were taken from home and they are all under the care of the Missouri Division of Family Services.
