HUD taking control of Alexander County Housing Authority

The United States Department of Housing and Urban Development is taking possession of the Alexander County Housing Authority.

In a news release, HUD says the takeover was due to, "…a years-long pattern of financial and operational mismanagement, poor housing conditions, and alleged civil rights violations against the households the local housing authority was responsible for assisting."

Board Executive Director John Clarke resigned after the announcement.

In his letter of resignation Clarke writes, "It is painfully clear that, for the past year, it has been HUD’s agenda to put the Alexander County Housing Authority into receivership, which means folks who live even further away from our community will be making the decisions."

HUD says two administrators have been assigned to assume day-to-day control of the housing agency.

HUD will also be hosting a meeting for residents on Tuesday, February 23. The meeting will be held at 6:00 p.m. on the 1st floor of the Smith Building.
