Jefferson set to go to trial on criminal charges

A trial date has been set for Friday, May 13, in the case against Dr. Ted Jefferson. The orthopedic surgeon is accused of making gun-related remarks at Baptist Health Paducah.

He’s facing terroristic threatening and disorderly conduct charges. In police body cam video, Jefferson tells police he was upset because his surgical tray was unsanitary.

Jefferson’s lawyer says the truth will come out on May 13.

"Subpoenas are going to be issued, people will be put under oath — people from the administration, people that made these complaints against Dr. Ted — and at that point they will answer these questions," says Defense attorney Bard Brian.

Nearly all those questions focus around one picture.

Brian says it shows one of Jefferson’s surgical trays from Jan. 26, the day before his arrest.

Brian won’t say how he got the photo or who took it, but he says the equipment shown in it is the reason his client got upset.

Assistant County Attorney Jamey Mills says this case isn’t about corrupted medical trays.

"This case is about potential workplace violence," says Mills. "That’s something we take very seriously, and we have to. We don’t have the luxury of second guessing these sorts of things later."

Jefferson will have a pretrial hearing on April 19, followed by jury selection on May 13.

We reached out to Baptist Health Paducah on Tuesday, and they sent us this statement:

"Last month, Ted Jefferson’s peers voted to revoke his medical staff privileges, based on his own admitted statements, and it would be disrespectful to comment – other than to say we are focused on exemplary patient care."
