Primary voting open in Illinois and Missouri
Voters in Illinois and Missouri will head to the polls today to take part in their state’s primary.
Polls opened in both states at 6:00 a.m.
The big draw for many is expected to be the race for the White House.
Illinois and Missouri are among five states voting on the Democrat and Republican presidential candidates.
But in Illinois, some local voters will also have other items to vote on.
U.S. Representative John Shimkus is running for his 11th term in Congress. He is facing a rare challenge from State Senator Kyle McCarter.
Voters in Massac County will vote on a sales tax increase. The 1% tax increase would help pay for the estimated $5 million renovation of the courthouse in Metropolis.
Voters in Johnson County will also vote on a 1% sales tax increase. Money from that tax would be used to help clean the air in the building where many government offices are located. The building is full of mold which needs to be cleaned up.
Polls in Illinois and Missouri will close at 7:00 p.m.
