WKCTC students pick Joel Cates as Teacher of the Year
Students have named assistant math professor Joel Cates 2016 Teacher of the Year, West Kentucky Community and Technical College announced Monday.
WKCTC says Cates was picked from among 27 faculty members, who were all nominated by students at the college.
In Monday’s announcement, WKCTC quoted one student as saying: “I’ve had several courses with Mr. Cates, and I’ve never had a math teacher more engaging in the subject. He loves his course and his students; it is evident every day in his class.”
To be nominated for WKCTC, an educator has to have assistant professor status or above and have been a faculty member there for the past three years.
The college says this was Cates’ first time being nominated for the distinction. He joined the school’s faculty in 2011.
“It’s a profound honor to be at WKCTC and teach among my peers and teach these students: probably the best students in Kentucky,” Cates said. “When you get nominated, you don’t want to expect anything, but you hope and dream it might be you. And when you hear your name called, it’s validation of all that you’re doing for the students.”
