Witnesses give first-hand account of Mayfield tornado

We’ve been getting a lot of pictures and video of the tornado that touched down near Mayfield Tuesday afternoon, and we’ve also been talking to some witnesses.

Local 6’s Jennifer Horbelt ran into Mary Powell and Alan McCartney, who had an encounter with the tornado. They were at Farmer’s Slaughter House picking up some fish when the tornado touched down.

Powell told us exactly what she heard and saw.

"I heard a big noise that sounded like a truck," Powell said. "I was like ‘What in the world is that?’ So I was fixing to get out. He said ‘No you ain’t,’ I said ‘What is that?’ he said ‘That’s a tornado,’ So he left the windows up and held me down in the seat. And I was hollering ‘Jesus, Jesus, Jesus,’ It was down, and it went up right over my van. Thank you, Lord."

"God had an angel over us," she told Local 6 after surviving the storm.
