Paducah police arrest man accused in hit and run

Paducah police say a man was jailed after a hit-and-run wreck around noon Tuesday at the intersection of North 9th Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.

Police say 58-year-old Kim Froman reported she was driving a Dodge Caravan east on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive when a PT Cruiser ran a stop sign at North 9th Street and hit the side of her van. She said the PT Cruiser drove into a yard on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, hit the porch of a home, and backed up and hit a light pole before driving away from the scene.

When police got there, they say 47-year-old James West was walking a dog on the sidewalk at the scene and claimed he wasn’t involved with the wreck, but that a friend of his was and he was going to the scene to help.

But, police say, the friend — 32-year-old Albert Reed — told them West was the driver of the PT Cruiser. Froman also told police West was the driver. As police checked on Reed, who was injured in the wreck, they say West ran away from the scene. They say an officer caught him at the intersection of 10th Street and Park Avenue.

West was arrested on charges of driving under the influence and leaving the scene of an accident. Police say a computer check revealed West is wanted in Mississippi for probation violation as well. He was jailed in the McCracken County Regional Jail.

Reed was taken to Baptist Health Paducah.
