Inmate serving life sentence dies in Missouri prison

A 71-year-old inmate at a prison died Tuesday night at a prison in Mississippi County, Missouri, according to the state department of corrections. 

According to a news release sent Wednesday, inmate John Schafer was pronounced dead at 10:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Southeast Correctional Center in Charleston. The department of corrections says Schafer died of "apparent natural causes."

Schafer was serving a life sentence for seven counts of sodomy, one count of rape, and four counts of abuse of a child from Jackson County, Missouri. He had been an inmate since Aug. 6, 2004.
