U.S. 51 Ohio River ‘Cairo’ Bridge back open after barge hit

UPDATE: The U.S. 51 Ohio River "Cairo" Bridge has reopened to traffic after it was closed for a time Monday afternoon. A pier on the bridge was hit by a barge.

KYTC spokesman Keith Todd says an inspection found no damage to the bridge.

The U.S. 51 Ohio River "Cairo" Bridge is closed to traffic because a barge hit one of the bridge’s piers, according to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.

KYTC spokesman Keith Todd says the U.S. Coast Guard Operations Center in Louisville has reported that an empty chemical barge broke loose from a fleeting area just upstream from the bridge and hit the pier around 2:30 p.m.

A KYTC bridge inspector has been sent out to perform a safety check on the bridge, and the bridge will stay closed while the inspector is working.

The bridge connects Wickliffe, Kentucky, with Cairo, Illinois, over the Ohio River.
