Paducah nightclub ramps up safety efforts after recent shooting
Denzel Powell, Christopher Smith and Tracell Nunn are facing murder chargers in the death Gary Johnson. The three men were back in court on Friday for a pretrial hearing. Witnesses say back in April, several people were shooting at each other outside The Brickhouse in Paducah. Police say Johnson was not involved in the shooting, but was hit by a bullet and later died.
Concerned for your safety, owner Lucious Jones is speaking out.
"These people out here, they just shoot at each other like it’s the Wild Wild West," says Jones.
Jones says the people inside his club aren’t the problem.
"It’s the people that come around between 12 and 2:30 a.m., standing outside on the lot across the street," says Jones.
After the shooting in April, Jones was fed up and took matters into his own hands, investing thousands of dollars in security cameras. More than a dozen are now scattered around the property and inside the nightclub.
"We make sure that everybody who comes through here has been seen," says Jones.
Paducah Police Assistant Chief Brian Krueger says over the past month, officers have been making an effort to patrol that area, especially at night.
"Try to spend more time over there in general," says Krueger. "We’ve also got plans to meet with residents that live in the area, get their perspectives on things that we might be able to do that we haven’t thought of ourselves."
Jones says he hasn’t seen that many police in the area. At least, not as many as he’d like.
"It seems like somebody is waiting on something to happen before anything is done about it," says Jones.
Powell, Smith and Nunn will be back in court on Sept. 26 to continue the pretrial hearing.
