Benton, KY road closed due to bridge erosion

A portion of a road is closed in Benton, Kentucky because of floodwaters.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says floodwaters have eroded pavement at the north end of Town Creek Bridge. The bridge is near the Benton Drive-In at the north end of Benton City Park.

A bridge inspector says the bridge is safe, but that the floodwaters have eroded the road base at the north end of the bridge making it unsafe for drivers.

Northbound US 641/Poplar Street is closed between 16th and 15th Street because of the erosion.

Drivers can self-detour via 17th Street to Park Avenue and reconnect to US 641 via 14th Street. Trucks will have to use an alternative route via the US 641-Spur at Benton.

Southbound traffic on US 641/Main Street is not impacted.

The road will likely stay closed for several days so that engineers can determine the extent of repairs that may be needed.
