Woman dies after vehicle caught in floodwaters

Floodwaters claimed a woman’s life Thursday night, according to the Johnson County, Illinois, coroner.

Coroner David Rockwell said a family was driving on Browning Lane Thursday night when the vehicle pulled off a section of road that was covered in floodwater. Rockwell said the water was deeper than they thought, and the vehicle went downstream.

Rockwell said rescue crews were able to get three of the four people trapped in the vehicle out in time, but 75-year-old Karen Werner of Johnson County died at the scene.

One person was taken to Heartland Hospital in Marion, Illinois, for injuries Rockwell said were not life threatening. The two other people in the vehicle were not hurt.
