After deadly crash, neighborhood wants drivers to slow down

Riding bikes is a common outdoor activity and one Dan Stopka’s grandchildren take advantage of when they can.  However, he said that joy ride has its risks living on Church Grove Road.

"I’ve seen cars go by here in at an excessive rate," he told Local 6.

The recent bicycling death of teenager Warren Jaco, who’s Stopka’s distant relative, now has him on a crusade to protect the children on his street. "There’s a strong concern that one of these days, something can happen," Stopka said.

He lives less than a mile from the new South Marshall Middle School and fears when school starts, traffic will be more frequent.  We saw no speed limit signs on Stopka’s road.  "Everybody that is going to be picking their children up from Benton are going to be using this street," he explained.

Many states are doing away with children at play signs. Studies have shown it gives parents a false sense of security when letting their kids play in the streets, and the signs don’t make drivers more observant.

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet spokesman Keith Todd said the state reviews traffic patterns after every deadly crash, but the county’s fiscal court handles most traffic concerns.

"If somebody does feel that there’s a need, go to your county judge and, if we get a request from the county judge, we will honor that request," Todd said.

"You try to teach kids safety in the roads and you know, watching out, but kids are kids," Stopka said.
