Who is funding group challenging Illinois redistricting?

A group waging an aggressive legal battle to keep a redistricting question off November’s Illinois ballot hasn’t reported a single donation or expense since it became a political committee last summer.

The Illinois State Board of Elections filings deepen the mystery of who is funding The People’s Map and paying legal bills.

The group is comprised of community leaders who say they represent minority voters’ interests. They filed a lawsuit in May against an effort allowing voters to decide if an independent commission should draw political maps instead of the party in power.

According to State Board of Elections filings, the organization hasn’t reported donations, loans or expenditures. That includes $12,000 in union donations.

The People’s Map says they didn’t cash the union checks and their reports are accurate.
