Neighbors react to deadly fire, murder, accidental death
CALLOWAY COUNTY, Ky. —
Kentucky state police say two gunshot wounds killed Linda Whittenberg. She’s the woman found dead inside a Calloway County home that caught fire on Tuesday. A second person, a man was also found inside the home. That person has not yet been identified.
Investigators say the second identity has taken some time because they weren’t able to find any of his family, so now they’re working to identify him through dental records. The body being burned also presents some problems. Neighbors told me they believe they know who the man is, but Kentucky State Police say they don’t want to speculate on something like that. Those same neighbors told me, the tragedy next door is a shock.
More people were driving through Clayton Wireman’s quiet neighborhood on Wednesday. Wireman says he was a little familiar with those who lived here, and believes he knows the man who died inside.
Wireman says, “We’d all go fishing together and that’s where I met them at.”
But a fire in his neighborhood that killed two, he says it’s a shame and incredibly sad. Wireman says, “You hate to see anything about anyone you know is gone.”
Kentucky State Police Sergeant Kyle Nall says they don’t believe there is a suspect at large, and his crews have been working diligently to find answers. He says, “There’s some unique factors that go into anytime we have a fatal house fire there are some unanswered questions.”
But Nall says especially with a family member murdered, and the suspect dead, it’s a difficult reality to grasp. He says, “A lot of times closure for the families is prosecution and in a case like this you don’t have that.”
Nall says all they can do, is try to answer questions, “(we) hope through that the family can find some closure.”
One of Linda’s close friends says Linda was a loving friend, mother, and wife. She says they’re heartbroken because of their loss.
Nall said a dog was also shot and killed at the house. He says they sent the dog for a necropsy to see if the bullet came from the same shotgun.
