TBI investigating fatal shooting of agent

A Tennessee Bureau of Investigation special agent was fatally shot Tuesday afternoon during a drug investigation, according to the TBI.

The TBI says special agents are investigating the circumstances surrounding shooting, which happened in the Brianfield Cove area of Jackson, Tennessee. The agency says

The special agent, 35-year-old De’Greaun Frazier, was among several agents working with the Jackson Metro Narcotics Unit during a controlled drug buy around 2 p.m. Tuesday in a vehicle near Brianfield Cove, the TBI says. The agency says a person in the backseat of the car, whom Frazier met to buy illicit drugs, pulled out a gun and tried to rob him and an informant sitting in the front seat.

The TBI says that person fired once, hitting Frazier. The agent later died at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital.

The bureau says the alleged shooter was found not far from the scene by officers and arrested.

Frazier had just joined the TBI in February after working as an officer with the Millington Police Department. In a statement released Tuesday, TBI Director Mark Gwyn had this to say:

Agent Frazier was exactly what we look for in a TBI Agent: hard-working, enthusiastic, and dedicated to making Tennessee a better place to live. We are deeply saddened by his death and will work aggressively to investigate this case to its fullest. His commitment to our agency and public service will not be forgotten.
