Bridge Day offers chance to walk new Eggners Ferry Bridge
Before the new Eggners Ferry Bridge in Aurora, Kentucky, is 100 percent open to vehicular traffic, you will have a chance to walk along it.
The westbound lanes opened in April, but the eastbound lanes aren’t open yet. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has scheduled what it’s calling a Bridge Day event on Wednesday, Aug. 31. Folks can walk along the unopened eastbound lanes of the new bridge from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. After the walk, there will be a ribbon cutting ceremony at the center of the bridge.
After the ribbon cutting, walkers will have to clear the bridge. The new Eggners Ferry Bridge will be open to four-lane vehicular traffic around 1 p.m.
KYTC spokesman Keith Todd says this event is like a Bridge Day that was held on the old bridge when it reopened after it was hit by a cargo ship in 2012.
Those who want to take part are asked to park at the Fenton Access Area of Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area and use the shoulder of the road to walk to the bridge deck.
Trail connections for the walkway along the bridge are still under construction. Todd says KYTC will have another event once that trail is finished, which is estimated to happen in six to eight weeks.
