Coal terminal plans layoff in Metropolis

A spokeswoman with American Electric Power confirms layoffs are planned at Cook Coal Terminal in Metropolis, Illinois.

Melissa McHenry from American Electric Power says coal terminal management has notified all employees that 22 positions will be eliminated. They have not decided which 22 employees will be laid off. The terminal, located along U.S. 45 in Metropolis, has 69 employees, meaning only 47 will remain.

McHenry says workers at the Metropolis location mainly load coal from Western Coal Trains onto barges. She says the company has been seeing significantly lower volumes because of lower coal production and increased use of natural gas.

She says there are no plans to close the terminal at this time.

The staff reductions will be complete by Nov. 3,
