Charge upgraded after woman dies from injuries suffered during an altercation

The commonwealth amended Christopher Smith’s charge to murder on Monday.

Smith was originally charged with first degree assault of 39-year-old Rhonda Runyon.

Runyon was found with serious injuries on Thursday at a home just west of Kirksey.

She was taken to a Nashville hospital and died from her injuries on Saturday.

Smith told deputies they had been in an altercation.

In court on Monday, his assault charge was upgraded to murder.

His bond was also increased to $1 million.

Smith will apply for a public defender.
