Fatal plane crash confirmed in Jefferson County, Illinois

We have confirmed there was an ultralight airplane crash in Jefferson County Illinois on Tuesday. The Associated Press reports one person died in the crash. 

Some of you alerted us on Facebook about the crash around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. 

Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department confirms there was an ultralight plane crash. 

The AP reports that Jefferson County Coroner Eddie Joe Marks has confirmed that one male died in the crash, and an autopsy has been planned. Marks says the crash happened around 4 p.m. Tuesday in Mt. Vernon, according to the AP. 

Ultralight planes are lightweight, one- or two-seat aircraft. 

The AP reports that a Federal Aviation Administration spokesman says the ultralight is so small that it may not be considered an aircraft at all, and local authorities are likely to complete the investigation into the fatal crash.
