Owners react after American flags stolen in Paducah

Jan Scott woke up Friday morning, walked outside and immediately noticed her American flag was gone.

"We had a very large flag, and it was overwhelming. And that’s how I noticed it," says Scott. "It was, like, empty. It’s gone."

Scott doesn’t like the fact that a stranger came onto her porch and stole something meaningful to her family, and she’s not the only victim.

Just down the street from Scott’s home in Paducah there’s an empty pole in front of the Alben Barkley Memorial. Head downtown to the Desert Storm Memorial, and you’ll hear clanking instead of a flag flapping in the wind.

Eric Abbott is an officer at the Paducah Police Department. He’s also a veteran.

"I think it’s very disrespectful to say the least," says Abbott.

Abbott believes the thefts started Thursday night. Since then, about 10 flags have been reporter stolen, including one from the Paducah Police Department.

"I don’t know what the motivation was," says Abbott. "Maybe it was a practical joke or something like that. It’s not funny at all, and I just, I don’t really understand why."

In the security video we got from police, you can see the man waving to the cameras as he walks away with the flag.

Local veteran Hardy Gentry says he’s sad to see someone do that to our nation’s flag.

"Very upset," says Gentry. "This is what we do. This is a part of us. We served that flag. We don’t want to see anybody take it down, tare it up or do anything to it."

Scott says she gets sick just thinking about it.

"I doubt very seriously that there was a good intention behind it," says Scott. "It’s not like they were going to go hang it on their own house."

Attached to this story is a picture of the suspect and the car police say he was driving. Call police if you know anything or if your flag was stolen.
