Man arrested in string of flag thefts, flags recovered

An Indiana man has been arrested in a string of American flag thefts in the area, Paducah police announced Friday.

Police say 43-year-old Andy Sneed of Indianapolis, Indiana, was arrested Friday after a caller reported a truck was driving recklessly to 911.

Officers found a black pickup truck matching the caller’s description — and the description of the one caught on surveillance footage of the flag theft from the police department — on Circle Lake Drive. Sneed owns the truck, and officers contacted him. Police say Sneed said he did have a number of flags, but that he "acquired" them or that they were given to him.

Officers say when they opened the tailgate of the truck, they found 19 American flags, a Paducah city flag, a Kentucky state flag and a flag that belongs to a local church. They say the flags were found among garbage in the truck bed.

Sneed was arrested on a charge of felony theft by unlawful taking and jailed in the McCracken County Regional Jail.
