Local school honored with national award

A local school has been honored with a national award.

Southwest Calloway County Elementary School was named a 2016 National Blue Ribbon School Wednesday by U.S. Secretary of Education, John. B. King Jr.

The school is one among 279 public and 50 private schools receiving the honor.

Superintendent Tres Settle says the school is being recognized for their academic growth and, "their determination to eliminate achievement gaps within student subgroups."

Schools are nominated for the award by the state department of education.
