New poll shows Hillary Clinton leading Donald Trump in Illinois

A recent poll shows Hillary Clinton is leading Donald Trump in Illinois.

The Paul Simon Public Policy Institute at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale conducted a poll of 1,000 registered voters.

Of those polled, 53% said if the election was held today they would vote for Hillary Clinton.

Twenty-eight percent said they would vote for Donald Trump, 5% said Libertarian Gary Johnson, and 2% said Green Party candidate Jill Stein.

Nine percent of respondents said they were unsure of who they would vote for.

When broken down by location, Trump was almost tied with Clinton in downstate Illinois. Forty percent of downstate poll respondents said they would vote for Trump, while 39% said they would vote for Clinton.

John Jackson, one of the poll designers and visiting professor at the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute, said the results are in line for what is expected of a Democratic presidential candidate in Illinois saying that the state, "has not voted for a Republican presidential candidate since 1988."

The poll was conducted in the week after the first debate between Clinton and Trump. You can see the full results below.
