Former judge executive dies after wreck involving bicycle, car
The bicyclist killed in a wreck involving a car on Cairo Road Thursday was former McCracken County Judge Executive Van Newberry, the McCracken County Sheriff’s Department says.
Deputies say 60-year-old Newberry was riding a bicycle south on Old Cairo Road, as was the driver of the car involved. They say the driver told them Newberry moved from the shoulder of the roadway.
The bicycle was hit by the right front end of the car’s bumper, and deputies say Newberry was thrown from the bike. He suffered injuries to his head and chest.
Deputies say other drivers who came upon the crash scene started CPR on Newberry, which was continued by emergency responders until he arrived at Lourdes hospital in Paducah.
Newberry was pronounced dead at the hospital.
No charges have been announced regarding the wreck, and the sheriff’s department says the investigation is still underway.
