Paducah man arrested on DUI after crashing van

A Paducah man was arrested on a DUI after he crashed his van Thursday night injuring him and his passenger.

The McCracken County Sheriff’s Department says they were called out to a crash in the 7400 block of Old Hinkleville Road around 10:00 p.m. Thursday.

Deputies say 56-year-old James Schmidt of Paducah was driving on Old Hinkleville Road when he failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection with Buchanan Road.

The van went into the ditch and overturned onto its passenger side. The van was also towing a small utility trailer at the time.

The passenger in the van, 46-year-old Gayla Schmidt of Paducah, had to be extricated from the van. Both were taken to a local hospital.

James was treated and released. Gayla was hospitalized with incapacitating injures.

Deputies say James was driving the van under the influence of drugs/alcohol which was the primary contributing factor of the crash.

After being released from the hospital James was arrested and taken to the McCracken County Regional Jail.

James has been charged with operating a motor vehicle under influence of drugs/alcohol 3rd offense aggravating circumstances and assault 1st degree.
