West Kentucky’s largest solar farm to help power homes in Graves County
West Kentucky’s largest solar farm goes online on Monday, and it will soon power a number of homes in the Mayfield area.
In the outskirts of Mayfield sits a farm unlike the type you usually see in Graves County.
"It’s actually a power plant. It’s actually registered through the state as a public service utility," said Dave Wright with Energy Services Group Inc.
Wright and his family started making their vision to build the solar farm a reality about two years ago.
"We’ve tried as a family to give back to the community where we can through church, through civic organizations," Wright said.
With the solar farm, the family hopes to give back again by providing clean energy to the area.
On Monday, the family celebrated a 20-year contract with the Tennessee Valley Authority. TVA will purchase all the power the farm produces and supply it to Mayfield Electric and Water System.
The 1-acre farm is made up of 1,260 solar panels. Wright says it will create enough electricity to sufficiently power 60 to 65 homes every year.
Program Manager for TVA Customer Service Tim Hughes says, while you won’t necessarily notice a change in your energy bill, the contract is meant to prevent energy costs from spiking.
"Rather than rely on natural gas and see natural gas prices spike, you have other means to generate electricity," Hughes said.
TVA is buying the energy at a market-based rate. That means it’s price will be competitive with other sources of energy.
Wright wouldn’t say the exact cost, but he says he’ll be able to pay it off within 10 years. Wright did say he was able to afford the farm between grants and tax incentives.
