Video captures Irma tearing through 90-year-old woman’s patio

BENTON, KY— A local couple sent in a video that captures Hurricane Irma in action, blowing apart a patio screen room in Kendall, Florida.

“We were just down there in May sitting in it, but yeah, that was amazing when I saw the video. The neighbor just happened to be watching at the time,” said Doug Moore.

The home belongs to Doug’s 90-year-old mother. He says she was not home when her neighbors captured the footage.

“It would’ve probably given her a heart attack, and it would have given me a heart attack if I stood there looking and all of a sudden it took off over the roof,” Doug said.

With a lot of their family in Florida, Doug and his wife, Sally Moore, watched weather updates constantly from their Benton, Kentucky, home as Hurricane Irma tore through the state.

“You can feel it. You just hate it, and you know what they’re going through,” Doug said. The couple lived in Florida during Hurricane Andrew in 1992. It destroyed their home with them inside.

“It’s an event in your life you never forget,” Sally said. “We actually kissed each other goodbye, because we thought we were going to die. We didn’t think we’d make it through it.”

After that experience and seeing the video of his mother’s patio, Doug says all that matters is that his mother and the rest of their family are alive.

Doug says most of his family members’ homes are still livable. His mother is staying with his sister. He plans to go to Florida at the end of the week to help his mom deal with the damage to her home.
