Union City beats Tyner in double-overtime to win state title
Union City’s Braxton Waddell scored on an 11-yard touchdown run in double-overtime to give the Golden Tornadoes a 27-21 win over Tyner Academy in the TSSAA Class 2A State Championship game.
Union City ran the ball 72 times for 323 yards in the game — they never attempted a pass. Trey Jones rushed 44 times for 188 yards and two scores for the Golden Tornadoes.
Tyner trailed 14-6 with :14 left in regulation when the Rams scored on a 33-yard touchdown pass, along with a 2-point conversion, to tie the game at 14.
After the teams exchanged touchdowns in the first overtime, Waddell scored in the second overtime to clinch the win.
This is Union City’s fourth-ever state football championship.
