The best “I am Local 6” of 2017: Lou Ann Powers

DRESDEN, TN- As 2017 comes to a close, we’re looking back on the best stories of the year.

Earlier this week, we asked you to help up determine our best “I am Local 6” story of 2017. We created a poll on our Facebook page featuring six of our best stories.

More than 800 people voted within two days and there was a clear winner: Lou Ann Powers. Powers began teaching young children in 1961 and immediately saw a need. Her students would come to class hungry and in need of new clothes. She met that need by bring snacks and saving toys in a closet for Christmas. That eventually turned into Santa’s Helpers in 1995. There, people in Northwest Tennessee can receive free food and clothes.
