Six myths about the flu
We’re right in the middle of flu season and if you’ve ever had it, you know how sick you can get.
Chances are good that some of the advice friends and family gave you about avoiding or dealing with the flu is wrong.
That’s why we’re tackling six major myths about the flu and how to treat it.
Myth #1 – You can catch the cold from the vaccine.
- Harvard Medical School says the vaccine is made from an inactivated virus that can not transmit infection. So if you get sick after getting vaccinated, you were going to get sick anyway since it takes one to two weeks for the vaccine to take effect.
Myth #2 – Healthy people do not need to be vaccinated.
- Everyone can benefit from getting the vaccine. The current Center for Disease Control guidelines recommend a flue vaccine every year for everyone over the age of six months.
Myth #3 – The vaccine is all you need to protect yourself.
- There is so much more you can do, like washing your hands and avoiding contact with people who have the flu.
Myth #4 – Chicken noodle soup will speed up your recovery from the flu.
- Hot liquids can soothe your sore throat, but it doesn’t have anything else in it that fights the flu.
Myth #5 – You can catch the flu from going in cold weather without a coat or with wet hair.
- You can only get the flu from the influenza virus.
Myth #6 – You can’t spread the flu if you are feeling well.
- Actually 20 to 30 percent of people carrying the influenza virus show no symptoms.
