2 lanes of new Lake Barkley Bridge open to traffic

TRIGG COUNTY, KY – The new U.S. 68/Kentucky 80 Lake Barkley bridge at Canton opened to two-way traffic Monday.

The new structure will replace the two-lane Henry R. Lawrence Memorial Bridge. The new bridge will eventually be four lanes wide.

For now, only two lanes are open while workers finish tasks including work on a multi-use path and painting the main arch of the bridge. The remaining work is expected to be finished by the end of the year.

Traffic has been shifted from the old bridge to the two open lanes of the new bridge so engineers can develop a timeline for the demolition of the old bridge. Crews will start removing the concrete deck from the old bridge Tuesday or Wednesday.

They expect to demolish the Henry R. Lawrence Memorial Bridge, which was built in 1932, in late March or April.
