Explosive demolition date tentatively scheduled for old U.S. 68/KY 80 Lake Barkley Bridge

CANTON, KY — A tentative date has been set to bring down the spans of the old U.S. 68/KY 80 Lake Barkley Bridge.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says, weather permitting, the blasts will be on Wednesday, April 11.

Over the last month, a demolition crew has been removing the concrete deck from the bridge getting it ready for demolition.

The blast will halt traffic on the new U.S. 68/KY 80 Lake Barkley Bridge for several hours. River traffic will also be halted.

Once the main steel truss structures are dropped into Lake Barkley, cranes will be used to remove them.

There is expected to be limited viewing areas for the public. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is working on guidelines for the public and will release them at a later date.

The new  U.S. 68/KY 80 Lake Barkley Bridge was opened on February 12. The old bridge has been in place since 1932.
