CARLISLE COUNTY, Ky. — Circuit Court Judge Timothy Langford sentenced Anita Roach to one year in a state penitentiary on Thursday.
The ruling comes after a jury found Roach guilty of reckless homicide in connection to the 2011 bus crash that killed 6-year-old Logan Simpson.
Roach's attorney, Will Kautz, made a final plea to the judge that his client receive probation.
"This was a tragic accident," Kautz said. "I can't believe the pain the families have gone through. Nothing that you do, nothing that I do, nothing Mr. Stacy does will bring Logan back or make the pain go away."
"I'd like to go home to my family," Roach cried when speaking to the judge.
Logan Simpson's parents also addressed the court and said the three weeks Roach has been in jail ahead of Thursday's official sentencing wasn't enough.
"My son's life is worth a whole lot more than her spending three weeks in jail," Kenny Simpson said.
Melissa Simpson added, "(Roach) can go back to her family but I can't see Logan again until I die and leave this world. We miss him. We miss him and I just don't think three weeks is long enough."
In the end, the judge agreed and sentenced Roach to one year in prison.
