PADUCAH, Ky. - A local man was rushed to the hospital Thursday after the fuel pump he was working on exploded at his Southside business.

Guy Handley, the owner of Handley's Auto Repair, was treated for 2nd and 3rd degree burns before being released Thursday afternoon.

The fire started shortly before 10 a.m. Three people were inside the building but Handley was the only one to receive injuries.

The day's heat made the fire particularly difficult for crews to contain. Firefighters from Paducah, Ledbetter, Reidland, Hendron, and Possum Trot all responded, but additional backup was needed.

In addition to structural damage, several cars were being worked on inside the shop. There is no word yet on possible damage to vehicles.

Customer Mike Steele tells Local 6 the location was relatively new for Handley, who opened up just a few months ago.  He says his friend is planning to re-open the shop.

He called Handley a "good friend and a good mechanic with a good heart" and said Handley will spend the next several days recovering at his home.
