Du Quoin woman sentenced for manslaughter of newborn
DU QUOIN, Ill. - A southern Illinois woman has been sentenced to three years in prison for Involuntary Manslaughter in the death of her newborn.
Investigators said Casey Parnell put her newborn son, Gabriel, in a trash bag after giving birth to him on January 22, 2011. Parnell admitted at a hearing in March of this year that she gave birth to the child while at a crack cocaine party and believed he was dead. A forensic pathologist said that Gabriel died of hypoxia-asphyxiation from being wrapped in a towel and placed in the trash bag.
Investigators added that Parnell tried to cover up the death.
Police arrested Parnell in December 2012 and charged her with Involuntary Manslaughter, Concealment of a Homicidal Death and Concealment of a Death.
In addition to prison time, Parnell must also serve one year of mandatory supervised release and undergo alcohol and drug counseling.
