HERRIN, Ill. - City leaders in Herrin, Illinois gave crews the go-ahead to continue excavations in a local cemetery.

The excavation started back in September to recover victims of the 1922 Herrin Massacre.

Researchers are looking for massacre victims along with how many modern-day burials may be located in the cemetery.

Wednesday night, they presented their findings including evidence of five sets of unmarked remains in burial plots belonging to other families.

Herrin mayor Vic Ritter had said he believes there's been enough work done at the cemetery but the council agreed to allow digging to continue.
