Former Paducah assistant fire chief gets 13 years in 31-year-old rape case
PADUCAH, Ky. - A former Paducah assistant fire chief was sentenced in a 31-year-old rape case on Wednesday.
The Paducah Sun reports that Circuit Judge Craig Clymer sentenced 62-year-old Barry Arant to 13 years in prison for a sexual assault that took place in 1982.
Arant faced rape and sodomy charges following his arrest in January. He pled guilty to 2nd Degree Rape and 2nd Degree Sodomy in April. Judge Clymer sentenced Arant to 6 1/2 years on each count, which will be served consecutively.
In addition to prison time, Arant must also register as a lifetime sex offender and complete a sex offender treatment program while in prison. He must also refrain from making contact with the victim.
Arant spent 25 years with the Paducah Fire Department and was the assistant fire chief for the department when he retired in 2000. He also ran an unsuccessful campaign for a seat on the Paducah City Commission in 2002.
