Future of Kentucky coal at issue at EPA hearings

FRANKFORT, Ky. — A standoff between Kentucky coal miners and state environmental leaders comes to a head Tuesday night in Frankfort.

There are 36 coal mine permit requests awaiting approva from the Environmental Protection Agency.

That's why hundreds of Kentucky coal miners, supported by Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell, will square off with environmentalists about the the future of the Kentucky coal industry.

Congressional sessions this week prevented McConnell from attending but he will send representatives to the EPA's hearings on coal in Kentucky.
