Man killed in Marshall County hit-and-run, no charges pending
MARSHALL COUNTY, Ky. - A Marshall County, Kentucky man is dead after a hit-and-run collision early Sunday morning. The person police say is responsible for that crash has been identified.
The hit-and-run happened around 1 a.m. Sunday along US 68 West in the Palma area. Deputies say 25-year-old Matthew Bonds, of Benton, couldn't get a ride home from a friend's house, so he was walking when he was hit between Griggstown Road and the McKenzie Park subdivision.
The Marshall County Sheriff's Office says Jerry Elrod, of Gilbertsville, was the driver. Elrod was driving his wife to deliver newspapers when he told deputies he thought he hit a deer. He said he stopped and looked around, but couldn't find what he hit, so he continued on his way.
The sheriff's office says foot tracks show that Elrod walked into the grass in an attempt to find out if he hit anything, but only got within 100 feet of where Bonds was discovered. Elrod also returned to the scene of the collision about seven hours later, but could not find anything. It was not until he went to the sheriff's office that he found out a person had been struck.
No charges are pending at this time, but the case will be presented to a grand jury.
