SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Illinois corrections officials say they're expanding a program that changes the meal schedule for prison inmates.

WUIS-FM reports the project serves two larger meals a day, rather than three traditionally sized meals.

The brunch and dinner schedule is already in place at two prisons and is being expanded to at least two more in the coming weeks.

Tom Shaer is a spokesman for the Illinois Department of Corrections. He says inmates like the altered meal schedule because sometimes breakfast can be served as early as 4 a.m.

He says later, larger meals are more convenient for inmates and easier on staff members who must prepare, serve and clean up after each meal.

But one watchdog group says inmates at Illinois River Correctional Center in Canton complained about portion sizes.
