Paducah Police warn of Mega Millions scamPADUCAH - The Paducah Police Department would like to inform the community of a scam that has been reported several times this week in the area this week. The scammers contact victims by telephone, advising them they have won the Mega Millions Lottery or Mega Millions Sweepstakes. The scammers request that the victim go to Wal-Mart or anywhere they can obtain a loadable money card and have a certain amount of money put on the card. This is supposed to cover the taxes owed by the victim for the sweepstakes winnings. If the victim purchases the money card, the scammers call back and obtain the card activation information and take the money. They will then call the victim again advising them the deadline for filing the tax fees had passed and that the victim needs to obtain additional money cards. Sometimes the scammers tell the victims that they will visit their home to obtain the money cards. So far, police have not received any reports of scammers actually showing up at any residences for the money. The phone numbers they call from are in New York. Police ask citizens to contact them at (270)444-4719 if anyone shows up at their home in connection with this scam. |
