Police officer, sheriff's deputy hit by tractor-trailer on I-57 in Illinois

PULASKI COUNTY, Ill. - A tractor trailer sent a southern Illinois police officer and sheriff's deputy to area hospitals after hitting both of them.

It happened Tuesday on I-57 in Pulaski County.

Illinois State Police say 44-year-old Mounds City Police Officer Lyle Womack was sitting in his cruiser with his emergency lights flashing when a tractor-trailer crashed into him.

After hitting the, cruiser, the tractor-trailer, driven by 27-year-old Yusuf Mohammad, then hit Pulaski County Sheriff's Deputy Kent Ray, 42, of Mound City.  Ray was on foot at the time.

Mohammad's tractor-trailer stopped in the center median and burst into flames.

Bother Officer Womack and Deputy Ray were rushed to area hospitals.  They were treated and released.

Illinois State Police troopers charged Mohammad with failure to yield to an emergency vehicle and failure to reduce speed to avaid an accident.

The crash is still under investigation.
