Prosecutor steps down in Claude Russell murder case
TRIGG COUNTY, Ky. - The prosecutor in an 11-year-old murder case has stepped down.
Back in 2002, 33-year-old Chantell Humphries, of Cadiz, Kentucky, was found dead in a field. An autopsy revealed she sustained several gunshot wounds.
An acquaintance of Humphries, Claude Russell, was accused of her murder in 2002, but those charges were dropped due to a lack of evidence.
In July 2012, Russell was arrested again and the case went back to court.
Commonwealth Attorney G.L. Ovey has stepped down from the case after receiving new information from Trigg County Sheriff Ray Burnham. Ovey says that information might help the defense and he might be called to testify for the defense, which he says violates the law.
