Three confirmed dead in Brookport, multiple injuries

UPDATE: The McCracken County Chief Deputy Coroner confirms a 63 year-old woman has died at Baptist Health Paducah from injuries sustained during the severe storms in Brookport. This brings the death toll to 3.


BROOKPORT, Ill. - Massac County Emergency Management Agency has confirmed two fatalities and several injuries following severe storms in Brookport, Illinois on Sunday.

Authorities have reported that several people are still trapped in their homes. Police officers are taking K9 units around the area to search for trapped residents.

Roads entering the city have been closed due to debris and downed power lines. Authorities are asking people to stay away from the area unless you are a resident.

Lourdes Hospital representative Suzanne Farmer has reported the emergency room is swamped with a variety of injuries with most appearing to come from the Brookport area. The extent of injuries are not known at this time.

If you would like to give supplies to Brookport residents, two churches are taking donations. The Victory Full Gospel Church in Metropolis, Illinois will be accepting bottled water and other supplies between 6 and 9 p.m. on Sunday night. The First Baptist Church, also in Metropolis, is accepting blankets until 6 p.m. on Sunday night.

Brookport authorities have issued a curfew in the city from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. due to the damage from the recent storm. Massac County Unit 1 schools are closed tomorrow as well.

Gas and electric services are being cut off in Brookport, Illinois for safety reasons.
